ITV's hit series The Bill has axed an extra who is listed in the Guinness Book Of Records for having had more walk-on parts than anyone else in television.

Vic Gallucci, 59, made more than a thousand appearances as DC Tom Baker over 13 years until he was abruptly sacked the other day.

"Suddenly, I got the elbow," he tells me. "I'm just annoyed at the way that it was done. I got a call at 6.10 on a Friday evening cancelling my three days the next week and I was told: 'You're no longer required on the show.'

"There were two reasons: my age and they want to make it more ethnically friendly. That to me is a load of old crap."

Until his dismissal, Gallucci was seen in virtually every episode of The Bill, either shuffling papers in the CID room or hovering around the coffee machines. He was such an ever-present figure that he was nicknamed Trev (Totally Reliable Extra Veteran).
